Mr. Derek John Fernandez is a Commission Member of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission. He is also the Chairman of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission’s Online Harms and Information Security Committee, Legal Committee and Nomination and Remuneration Committee.
Mr. Derek John Fernandez is also a director of CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) and a member of its Cybersecurity Audit Committee. He had also written a paper with an action plan entitled “Cybersecurity : The need for a change in Approach” dated 26 August 2022, which was submitted to the Minister of Communications and Digital.
Mr Derek John Fernandez was appointed as the Parliamentary Office Adviser for Petaling Jaya Parliamentary Office.
The paper has been used in part to formulate National Cybersecurity strategies and policies. Mr. Derek John Fernandez is also the Chairman of MCMC’s Technical Committee involved in preparing draft Guidelines on Information and Network Security for communications and multimedia industry.
He has also developed Cybersecurity policies that have been implemented nationally which include: anti scam and fraud measures and policies, licensing 2 of OTT platforms, national internet registry and IPV 6 adoption and digital sovereignty concepts. He has written several papers on cybersecurity policy including “Hiding behind Anonymity (5th February 2024)”, “New Regulatory Challenges from OTT and AI – A Question of Digital Sovereignty (6th – 8th December 2024)”.
