SC Leverages Digital Finance to Grow Capital Market

Kuala Lumpur, 30 October 2016

SCxSC Digital Finance Conference 2016 to Highlight Market-based Financing, Digital Investment Services, and Distributed Ledger Technology

Malaysia will continue to leverage the expanding range of digital finance tools to broaden investor participation within the capital markets, according to Securities Commission Malaysia (SC).

The ever-growing space of digital finance is evident in the value of fintech investments, estimated by an Accenture report to have reached US$22.3 billion globally in 2015.

The SC believes that technology will broaden retail investors’ participation and stimulate more innovative market-based financing options especially for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) segment of the business community. Since 2014, SC has embarked on the early adoption of market-based financing mechanisms, through the introduction of equity crowd funding (ECF) – the first country in ASEAN to do so – as well as peer-to-peer (P2P) financing in Malaysia.

In its ongoing efforts to lead the conversation in digitalisation of the capital market space, SC is organising “SCxSC Digital Finance Conference 2016” (SCxSC), with the theme “Capitalising Entrepreneurship”. The two-day conference will be held on 3 and 4 November at the SC building in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

This year’s conference will also broaden the focus of discussions on digital investment services (which include robo-advisory services) and distributed ledger technology. These new digital finance capabilities will change the complexion of capital markets and bring new potential growth to the industry.

The conference will feature international speakers such as Kevin Guo of Dianrong (China), Sunil Aranha of ThinCats (Australia), Chris Brycki of Stockspot (Australia), Keir Veskivali of Smartly (Singapore), Justin Amos of Digital Asset Holdings (US), and Jan-Arie Bijloos of Otomos (Singapore) sharing insights on the latest in digital finance.

There will also be an Agency Open Day with talks by MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation), MaGIC (Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre) and Cradle Fund representatives focused on entrepreneur and start-up ecosystem development. In addition, the programme will feature an Investor Day where businesses raising capital via SC-approved ECF platforms will pitch their investment opportunities.
